12. Third Generation (3G) and i-Mode:

 

12.1. Which percentage of i-Mode and Japan's mobile internet subscribers use 3G?

Almost all i-Mode subscribers use 3G only, not 2G.

Today (August 2008) about 90% of DoCoMo's subscribers also subscribe to i-Mode, and 85% of DoCoMo's subscribers are 3G subscribers. We conclude that only about 5% of i-Mode subscribers today use i-Mode via slow and expensive 2G connections.

 

12.2. Which data transmission rates are used for i-Mode?

2G: download: 9.6kbps or 27.8kbps (note that i-Mode initially in 1999 was introduced for 2G only, however today about 95% of i-Mode users use 3G connections only.

3G (FOMA): download 384kbps, upload: 64kbps

3G-HSDPA (FOMA-High-Speed): download: 3.6Mbps (DoCoMo's most recent phones, the 906i series, all are for 3G-HSDPA transmission rates)

 

KDDI has essentially terminated all 2G services, and both DoCoMo as well as SoftBank have scheduled 2G (PDC) services for termination.

 

12.3. Do 2G (PDC) and 3G (wCDMA) data transmission cost the same to customers?

No. 2G/PDC data transfers are substantially more expensive, and there are no fixed price all-you-can-eat data plans available for 2G. This is partly because 2G costs are much higher, and also to encourage customers to swith fully to 3G.

 

12.4. Which services are successful on 3G?

DoCoMo offers a very wide range of services on i-Mode enabled by the much higher data rates available for 3G and HSDPA. This includes mobile music downloads, video clip downloads, mobile shopping, mobile auctions and more.
