9. i-Mode's global footprint:
9.1. i-Mode business outside Japan:
DoCoMo put a lot of effort into marketing i-Mode globally. The first marketing and licensing partner was KPN for The Netherlands and for Germany, and the second was Bouygues Telecom for France. Later licensing partners were O2 in UK, Telefonica for Spain, Telstra for Australia and many more. There was an attempt to introduce i-Mode as "m-Mode" via AT&T-Wireless to the USA, however AT&T-Wireless was later acquired and is not the same company as today's AT&T which does not offere m-Mode. Today most of these operators outside Japan have either terminated i-Mode services, or have run down the i-Mode services and offer them only on a very small scale to a niche market. Essentially, it is fair to say, that the global introduction of i-Mode was not successful.
9.3. Using i-Mode outside Japan with a Japanese mobile phone - international roaming:
If you have on of DoCoMo's most recent i-Mode phones (e.g. 906i) series, then you can use i-Mode in Europe, US and in many other countries in the world. However, if for you example, you use your 906i phone in Europe or US, then in many cases data speeds will be limited by GSM or EDGE data speeds, and the i-Mode servers will be accessed in Japan, and roaming fees will be charged.
9.4. i-Mode email during roaming:
In our experience, i-Mode email works in Europe, US, Singapore, and most likely also in other countries (which we have not yet tested). During roaming e.g. in USA and Europe, i-Mode email works very well, however we experienced some delays in delivery, while i-Mode email is normally instanteneous (i.e. within 1 second or faster) within Japan.
