14. i-Mode and JAVA:

14.1. JAVA on i-mode:

JAVA enabled handsets have been introduced in Japan on 26 January 2001. The JAVA enabled imode handsets (series 503i) went on sale on 26 January 2001 and today essentially all i-Mode phones have JAVA machines built in, and allow download of JAVA applications. Initially, JAVA enabled handsets were due to be introduced for imode from late autumn 2000, however the introduction was delayed until 26 January 2001. JAVA enabled handsets contain the K virtual machine (KVM) from SUN separate from the browser. Users are able to download JAVA applets into the handsets for games, agent type services and other applications.

14.2. What are "i-Appli" (the "a" in i-Appli is often written as a greek alpha character)?

"iAPPLI" is DoCoMo's tradename (trademark) for JAVA applications which can be downloaded via DoCoMo's imode mobile internet service to JAVA enabled imode handsets.

14.3. Which "i-Appli" are available?

There are 100,000s of "iAPPLI" available, some are free and some are for sale or part of a subscription. "iAPPLI" exist in many different classes. For weather forecast, games, alarm clocks, for train time table information, map display and many other applications. "iAPPLI" can also work as agents in the the background collecting information from a server. An example of such an "iAPPLI" is DoCoMos fee-"iAPPLI", which displays your daily usage. This "iAPPLI" collects the usage and fee information autonomically, starting at preset intervals and downloading fee and usage information automatically in the background and displaying the fees graphically on demand.

14.4. Which handsets are "i-Appli"- JAVA enabled?

JAVA enabled handsets went on sale by DoCoMo in Japan on 26 January 2001. Today essentially all i-mode handsets have JAVA capability, and many handsets come with a number of "iAPPLI" preinstalled.

14.5. i-Appli access to wallet phone functions

i-Appli JAVA applications can access wallet phone functions as well as remote servers. Thus i-Appli can represent credit cards, which can then access both the remote servers, as well as the Felica chip in the wallet phone for mobile payments. The mobile-SUICA i-Appli provides a range of functions for railway ticketing including the remote issue of commuter season tickets which are then stored on the FELICA chip.
